In Mr. Rath’s 1st grade class, students were provided different choices for how they could retell a story. Whether the students chose writing, drawing, making a song, or acting the story out, their goal remained the same; show that they could retell a story including characters, setting, and key events.
After reading and rereading the story both as a large group and in pairs, students were given choices on how to show what they knew about the story. This activity helped students develop their critical thinking and retelling abilities using a style that worked best for them. After creating their project, students were given a chance to retell the story within their small groups using what they had created. Incorporating academic choice helped create a differentiated and engaging environment!
