Mrs. Spencer’s 1st graders use story map paper chains to assist in learning the elements of a book or story. Each of the four chains states one element with the accompanying “W question”. Characters ask, “Who?”, setting asks, “Where?”, problem asks, “What?”, and solution asks the question, “How?”.
Before, during, and after reading, the students purposefully and actively think about the characters, setting, problem, and solution. The class is always “on the lookout” for the story elements and as the author reveals each element, the students call out what element is being revealed. After sufficient modeling, the responsibility shifts to the students using the story map paper chain independently. They love it!
